Language
Language
Language is at the heart of the children's learning. Through language, children recieve much of their knowledge and aquire many of their skills.

In Barsail we teach children to:-

Listen carefully

Read with understanding

Write with expression and accuracy

Talk confidently and fluently

In doing this they will gain a sound knowledge of how language works and will become familiar with the many ways in which it is used.
Reading
All children have set reading ( reading that the teacher sets for homework) and are encouraged to read some pages of their library book each evening.

A library has been set up in the open area for P4-7 pupils and infant open area for P1-3 pupils. Many new books, both fiction and non-fiction, have been purchased. Pupils borrow these each week.
Spelling
Emphasis is placed on learning the rules of spelling and how they can be used. In the earlier stages phonics are taught. Each pupil will have spelling words to take home and learn.

The method used throughout the school is:-

LOOK at the word
COVER the word
SPELL the word
CHECK the word
Writing
Most of the writing ideas and skills are taken from Scholastic Writing. Pupils are encouraged to work in pairs, groups and individually to discuss ideas and plan for writing.

Writing Projects are undertaken throughout the year and parents have the opportunity to see these at parents' nights.
Listening and Talking
Listening and talking consistently permeates throughout language but there are set tapes for pupils to listen to and respond. All pupils will, at some point, throughout the year give a short presentation to the class. This may be based on the class topic, personal topic or some other aspect of the curriculum.
